Flat Drip vs Inline Drip vs Online Drip: Which Drip Irrigation Should You Choose?
By Pragati Agrotech Technical Team, Nashik · Updated · 3 min read
Quick answer
Flat drip and inline drip have drippers fixed inside the pipe at a set spacing, so they are best for crops planted in regular rows such as vegetables, onion, cotton and sugarcane. Online drip (plain lateral) has no built-in drippers; you punch a dripper exactly where each plant is, so it is best for orchards and widely spaced plantations like pomegranate, grapes, mango and banana. Choose by your plant spacing first, then by crop duration and budget.
Quick comparison
| Flat Drip | Inline Drip | Online Drip (Plain Lateral) | |

| Dripper position | Flat emitter built into pipe | Dripper fitted inside pipe | Dripper punched on the pipe |
| Spacing | Fixed: 20 / 30 / 40 cm (more on order) | Fixed: 30 / 40 / 50 cm | Any spacing you need |
| Sizes | 12, 16, 20 mm | 12, 16, 20 mm | 12, 16, 20 mm |
| Flow rate | 2 LPH, 4 LPH | 2 LPH, 4 LPH | Depends on dripper (2 / 4 / 8 LPH) |

What is flat drip irrigation?
Flat drip is a thin-walled lateral with flat emitters moulded inside the pipe at fixed intervals. Because it is light and economical per metre, it is widely used for seasonal and row crops where plants are close together.
Thickness matters: 0.2 mm laterals are the most economical for one season, while 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm laterals are stronger and better for longer-duration crops or repeated use. Pragati Flat Drip and Kisan Gold Flat Drip are both available in ISI and Non-ISI grades.
What is inline drip irrigation?
Inline drip has cylindrical drippers fitted inside the pipe at the factory. It gives uniform water to every plant along the bed and is commonly used for vegetables, floriculture and horticulture crops grown at regular spacing.
What is online drip (plain lateral)?
Online drip uses a plain lateral pipe. Drippers are punched into the pipe exactly where each tree or plant stands, and micro tubes can carry water further if needed. This flexibility makes it the standard choice for orchards and plantations where spacing is wide or uneven.
Because you choose the dripper, you can also give more water to bigger trees (for example 8 LPH) and less to young plants.
How to choose: 4 simple questions
- Is your plant spacing regular and close (under about 60 cm)? Choose flat or inline drip.
- Are plants widely or unevenly spaced, like fruit trees? Choose online drip.
- Is the crop seasonal? A 0.2 mm flat drip keeps cost low. For multi-season use, choose 0.3 or 0.4 mm.
- Is your water source silty (well, canal, pond)? Install a screen filter before the drip lines in every case.
Do not forget the accessories
Every drip system needs a filter, mainline or sub line pipe, take-off connectors, joiners, end caps and a flush valve. Using matching accessories prevents leakage and keeps pressure even across the field.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which drip is best for sugarcane?
Sugarcane is planted in regular rows, so flat drip or inline drip is usually preferred. Choose thickness based on how many seasons you want to use the laterals.
Which drip is best for pomegranate or grapes?
Online drip (plain lateral) is preferred for orchards because drippers can be placed exactly at each plant and flow can be increased as trees grow.
